- Planners and operators receive approaches to solutions for the safe and economical operation of the networks.
- The manufacturing industry benefits from insights into requirements, stresses and operational experience of products and systems, which are incorporated into new developments.
- Energy traders gain insight into what is technically and economically feasible.
- Science has a forum at its disposal where it can discuss its latest findings with users in a practice-oriented manner.
- Companies have the opportunity to benchmark with other companies.
- The members get an intensive personal contact to colleagues all over the world.
- In particular, CIGRE offers young engineers the opportunity to develop and become known on an international level.
CIGRE makes a significant contribution to the safe, environmentally friendly and economical supply of electrical energy to the world’s population.
Through its technical work, CIGRE influences IEC international standardization.

The ABB Fördererkreis supports the work of the ABB both in terms of content and financially. The annual contribution of 460 euros goes 100% to the promotion of lightning research and the further development and dissemination of lightning protection. In return, ABB sponsors receive a wide range of support for their work and contribute to the ABB’s well-founded representation of the interests in lightning and surge protection.
Lightning and surge protection is becoming increasingly important in the industrialized world: the number of installed lightning protection systems is growing, and a wide range of surge protection products is being used. All this expresses the technical progress that has been achieved in this field in recent years – not least supported by German standardization.
The Committee for Lightning Protection and Lightning Research of the VDE (ABB) makes a significant contribution to this. For more than 125 years, it has embodied the scientific and technical expertise in lightning protection issues in Germany.
ABB sponsors support the continuation of lightning research and the further development and dissemination of lightning protection with their annual contribution of 460 euros. In return, they receive diverse support for their work and contribute to ABB’s sound representation of lightning and surge protection concerns.
Benefits for ABB sponsors
- Twice a year, user conferences are held at which the latest technical and scientific findings, current developments in lightning protection and new standardization projects are presented.
- Questions and problems can be discussed and answered at the user conferences or in the ABB Technical Committee.
- Sponsors will each receive 20 copies of ABB publications sent to them free of charge.
- They receive a reduced participation fee at the VDE|ABB Lightning Protection Conference and at VDE Lightning Protection Seminars; this also applies to all company employees.
- The latest information on lightning protection and developments in the field of standardization can be found on the ABB homepage and exclusively on the VDE team server.
- Visibility on the VDE homepage, use of the VDE + ABB logo with the addition “ABB Förderer”.
