Limits and Opportunities of a Grid-serving, green Hydrogen Economy

Blauer Meereswellen Hintergrund.

Climate protection targets, price increases and independence – the demand for Low Carbon Hydrogen is increasing in light of current and future challenges. Yet the necessary foundations and economic concepts for a hydrogen economy are still not available – for grid-serving integration of green hydrogen through the use of electrolyzers, for example, in order to be able to respond to energy fluctuations. In our interview Dr. Kathrin Goldammer, Managing Director of the Reiner Lemoine Institute (RLI), recommends learning to walk before running. It is important to start with the expansion of renewable energies in order to prepare our energy system for a hydrogen economy.

Opening the way for battery storage

It is already clear that battery storage systems will play a significant role in our future energy system. One main advantage is that battery storage systems enable rapid charging and discharging processes to be carried out without any problems as part of the energy generation process. A disadvantage is still the high cost of storage technology today. It is true that the ongoing dynamic development of the products and services on offer gives rise to hopes that prices will fall. However, outdated regulations can prevent technological and economic progress in battery storage. Walter Albrecht, Managing Director of the Energy Community, suggests constructive solutions.

Learnings from the flood disaster in the Ahr valley: smart grid and digital networks are key factors for the energy transition

The flood in the Ahr valley showed how close the climate catastrophe already is. Storage technologies, component smartification and rapid, stable further development of the networks are important alongside well-practiced crisis management in order to be well prepared for future events. This also results in new fields of activity and career opportunities for young people. Creative minds who help decarbonize the energy system, not only in Germany, are now in particularly high demand.

FNN membership

It is the declared objective of the Network Technology/Network Operation Forum at VDE (VDE FNN) to ensure network operation throughout Germany at all times. A membership of the Power Grid Community offers companies the access to this influential forum. The VDE FNN Combines the interests of its members Represents those interests in public Introduces balanced […]
